I think the one thing I get the most questions about (of ALL things) is about my hair! I’ve always had thick long hair, since I was young (except a short period sophomore year of college when I decided to get a bob; not a good look on me to say the least.)
Air dry ALWAYS
For the past several years, I hadn’t even owned a hair dryer until recently. This actually came about simply due to laziness, but honestly it was such a game changer for my hair. I almost never blow dry my hair, and just let it air dry. With thick long hair, it takes forever, but I think the benefits are so worth it.
About a year ago, I purchased a Turbie Twist, and it’s been really great to have. The fibers are more gentle than the fibers in a towel, so you don’t have to worry about damaging your hair. It stays on top of your head, so it works great if you just have it in the cloth while you do your makeup or get dressed.
Extending hair wash time
I’ve been working on this for the last few months, and it’s been amazing! I grew up washing my hair every night when I showered, and when hair stylists would tell me to skip a few days between each wash, I always thought “my hair’s too oily for that.” So for all my gals out there that think this too – the trick is to train your hair! It takes a few weeks (at least it did for me) to train it, but find a dry shampoo you love. It’ll be your best friend, I promise. I know everyone loves the cult favorites (Batiste, Dove, IGK even) but my favorite is one that’s not in an aerosol can. I’m planning to write a post solely focused on my new favorite dry shampoo, so stay tuned for that.
Clean Hair Products
I’m sure part of it is purely genetics, but I’ve collected some products throughout the years that I feel like really help my hair grow long and healthy. I’ve tried out so many different products, and still continue to try new ones, but I have some staples that I love. I try to stick with only clean products (for both my skin and my hair) so pretty much all of the things I use are paraben and sulfate free. The only exception is that I use a dandruff shampoo in the winter because I get an extremely dry scalp (ew TMI, I know.)
